HeLLLLLLOOOOOoooo All,
on this warm and sunny morning.

In electrical engineering we have used many metals such as copper, brass, lead and steel etc. We have used a liquid metal like mercury in thermostats and switches of old, and solid tungsten in light bulbs as filaments.

Q1. Can lead float on quicksilver?

Q2. Will a small bar of tungsten float or sink in quicksilver?

Bye,

Z.

In ascending order, the densities are lead, mercury, tungsten, so lead floats, but tungsten sinks.

Gosh, you could even float glass on mercury, or even a lighthouse.

Yep, as Oliver Sacks as a young lad observed, lead can float on mercury but tungsten sinks in mercury. "Uncle Tungsten Memories of a Chemical Childhood."

Perhaps J.C. of old turned the water into mercury before he walked on it. As Chris suggested a light house (lens) may be supported in a bath of mercury and allowed to rotate. Here is a link to people being supported by liquid mercury.
