I wonder what made him put on his marigolds and start looking in the first place ?

He even says the wiring is 25-30 years old , so I presume has been faulty for some considerable time

Looks to me like someone in the past drilled right through a tile next to the socket and nicked the cable possibly damaging the neutral and earth.

Has our young marigold wearing fella tried fitting an rcd to the property and it keeps tripping out I wonder .....

OY, son! I could have wired them there red and black cables... hahaha!

Poor sod... it's sooooo easy but, what can we do?

Agreed.

I suspect too he's skipped a socket or two - probably behind the 'fridges. So probably no need to replace the cable all the way back to the living room.

I bet my pocket money that he has fitted a new consumers unit and one of the rcds keeps banging out ,

now he is flapping trying to remedy the faulty ring
yes my first port of call would be to pull those 2 fridges out and see if there is a double socket behind them ...
