Well I suppose that the removal van is booked and the movers are ready for the big move of this forum to its new I.E.T. location soon.

Are we looking forward to it?

Will it be a smooth transition?

Will we lose any forum members?

Waddayufink?

Move happening in February 2019

I do hope it will be a smooth transition.
Fingers crossed it won't have such a disastrous effect as befell all those other forum groups that were moved back in 2014.
The few that are still alive in their new home are shadows of their former selves.
Groups that used to carry hundreds of posts per year dropped to less than one per month...
IET staff bravely work the life-support machine by posting, "what's your opinion on..?"

Oh dear. Oh dear. I hope that the favourite phase of Dad's Army's Captain Mainwaring's platoon's Scottish member will not apply.

I had forgotten about this last working forum until recently. Hope it goes well for you all, if not welcome to Purgatory like those of us cast here before you . . . :-)

I think of it less of a move, more of a renovation.
Are we looking forward to it?

Yes, I'm looking forward to it - the new software solves quite a few of the irritating problems that the current software has (like being able to directly upload pictures and not having posts clipped when something wide is embedded).

Will it be a smooth transition?

Hopefully - certainly a lot of thought and work seems to have gone into it. There will be a few glitches at first I'm sure (there usually are with any project) - but it shouldn't be any worse than the hidden test Forum that a few of us have been using - and that's entirely usable.

Will we lose any forum members?

I'd hope not, but it is possible. Some people really don't like change, and change this will be. Hopefully the vast majority value the Forum enough to make the effort to get used to the new software (yes, it is different). Really the new system isn't all hard to get used to - the basic principles are pretty much all the same - just slightly different ways of doing things (and different colours/layout).

Blinkin Ek! The Last Working Forum. Sounds ominous. It could be a good film title though.

Any idea's on how to download the entire forum onto a disk. No idea how large the disk would need to be?

I had an Email about the move today I guess most people have had or soon will have the same Email. I personally have my doubts if it will go well I'm a bit concerned as to wether I will even be able to find it again. Change is generally not good but I hope that Lisa has done a good job and the move will be easy

I also had the email. It asks to reserve your current screen name should you wish to do so, by completing a simple on-line form.
It also says that any current bookmarks will continue to work and take you to the new forum, so there should be no excuse for not being able to find it.

Dusty,
at the top right on here is "I.E.T. Sites." If you click on it a drop down box appears. If you click on Engineering Communities you are on your way.

Has to be done by the end of February dustyd to coincide with the IET's new log on process.

The forum (i.e. the Wiring Regs category on the forum) will be here: Wiring and the Regulations

I've already opened it for posting topics so if you're not concerned about anonymity and being known as your real name, or your existing username is a variation of your real name e.g. Lisamiles for example then please feel free to come on over and start posting/answering questions there.

Once we switch on the username feature for the community then if you've told us via the form that you want to keep your username from here, it will change your username on all of the posts you have made.

I've popped a sticky announcement at the top of this forum which contains some FAQs too but if you have any further questions please ask!

Very big i would imagine.
Some knowledge on here (not necessarily from me)

I hope it doesn't become the mary celeste like all the other engineering forums that were moved.

I agree.
Sadly only the titles and very few of the actual posts live on in the wayback machine and of course this software cannot handle wayback style double links properly...
I guess we shall soon see if the new forum software can.

https://web.archive.org/web/20081220231829/http://www.theiet.org:80/forums/forum/

but if you just copy the full double link above into a new browser tab you can get a feel of how busy it used to be.

I believe they always will. Something to be aware of if you need to hide your identity.

I just hope we don't loose too many regulars who for their own reasons do not wish to disclose their identity.

Not all employers think this is a legitimate use of their time.

mmm. Must check if mine do
