Scope and objectives

The Railway TPN covers the electrical engineering aspects of the promotion, construction, regulation, operation, safety and maintenance of railway, metro, tramway and guided transport systems. Its range of interests includes rolling stock (traction and systems), signalling, stations, EMC, EMI, telecommunications, information systems, human factors, commercial issues, safety, maintenance and power distribution.

Railway engineers forum

The Railway TPN works closely with its equivalent bodies of the IET's sister engineering organisations of the Institutions of Civil Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Railway Signal Engineers, Railway Operators, the Railway Civil Engineers Association and the Permanent Way Institution under the auspices of the Railway Engineers Forum (REF).

The aim of the REF is to provide a multidisciplinary forum for railway engineers by promoting collaborative work through the organisations of the constituent member Institutions. The Secretariat and Chair rotates on a two yearly basis; The IET is currently responsible for these roles until June 2007. Information about the activities of the REF can be found  here.
