Digital 60- The Kilburn Lecture- The Relentless March of the Microchip
Lecture 20 June 2008 to be given by Professor Steve Furber CBE at the University of Manchester. This is part of the Digital 60 Celebrations which are to commemorate the anniversary of the successful running of a program on the 21st June 1948 on the 'Baby', the first operational stored program digital computing machine which was built by Williams and Kilburn. Science and the Public 2008 Conference

Three Societies 2008: Connecting Disciplines
The sixth joint meeting of the British Society for the History of Science, the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science, and the History of Science Society will take place at Keble College in Oxford, UK, on 4-6 July 2008. The theme of the meeting will be Connecting Disciplines and it will feature over 350 papers delivered over 3 days in up to 10 parallel sessions. These range chronologically from Ancient Science to the present with a wide thematic and geographical range. Please click on the link above for more information.
Conference- Scientific Voyages: Histories and Comparisons 8-10 July 2008
A three-day international interdisciplinary conference exploring relations between maritime exploration and the sciences in the period from the seventeenth century to the large-scale scientific expeditions of the nineteenth century. Jointly organized by the National Maritime Museum, the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge, and the Royal Society. Institute of Physics: The Rayleigh Laboratories
17 July 2008, Institute of Physics, London
The laboratories and equipment used by the Third Baron Rayleigh (John William Strutt) and his son, the Fourth Baron Rayleigh (Robert John Strutt), remain largely as they were when used by these great scientists. This unique inheritance from an earlier age provides a fascinating insight into the way that science was conducted at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries.This half-day meeting will provide an opportunity to hear about these laboratories and to learn about the scientific contributions made by the Third Baron Rayleigh. Many important conservation projects are often neglected after completion and important knowledge that could be shared is lost. This meeting, held jointly with the Historical Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry, will discuss conservation science, conservation of objects and conservation heritage projects. The meeting open to all, will be held in the recently refurbished Grade One listed building of the Royal Institution which has undergone a number of major conservation projects. There will be an opportunity, the previous evening, to visit the new exhibition spaces and heritage building.

The Defence Electronics History Society (DEHS) 2008 Events
The DEHS cordially invites HoT TPN members to its 2008 events. The Spring Lecture in May features two presentations: The US airborne acoustic torpedo – 1943-45 by John Beattie and Bletchley Park & the Y-Service, Sigint and the Allied Bombing Offensive by John Stubbington. Our Summer Visit to Amsterdam in September is to see Arthur Bauer’s extensive collection of German WW2 electronics artefacts. The Autumn Symposium will take place at Shrivenham in October. History lectures in Bromley, Kent April-May 2008
The IET Retired Engineers Section of SE London and NW Kent would like to invite all members and the public to their lectures. Of particualr interest is 'The Restoration of the Crossness Engines' looking at the state of London's sewage problem in the 1850s and the creation of the pumping station at Crossness. Also 'The History of Radar to 1945' by Phil Judkins of the DEHS. Lectures are held at Bromley Central Library 2 April and 7 May respectively at 10am. Please click on the link above for more details.
New Exhibition at the Museum of the History of Science, Oxford
Small Worlds: the art of the invisible: offers novel ways for visitors to enjoy the Museum's collection of Victorian and Edwardian microscopical specimens, in an exhibition of images, animation and poetry, made in collaboration with artist Heather Barnett and poet Will Holloway. Royal Society spring events programme 2008
Lectures are held on Friday lunchtime from 7 March to 9 May, open to all. Topics of interest include apothecaries, gardens and Britains obsession with gardening including a talk on Kew Gardens, the dark side of technological advancement and the bitter rivalries behind new discoveries, the domestication of electricity and its reception in the early 20th century, the drawings of John Smeaton, civil engineer, 17th century medicine and London's time carriers. Held at the University of Manchester during the teaching semester. Topics of interest include British science and technology in WWII, medical trade catalogues, the invention and historiography of the Jet, computers in the banking business, the 1980s home microcomputer in Britain, British television systems in 1936 and scientists in the Civil Defence Corps 1945-1968.
