IEE - Majordomo - Requesting a New List
New lists will only be set up for IEE Staff or Members who are involved with an IEE activity where a Majordomo list will be of assistance.
IEE staff should contact webmaster@iee.org, IEE members (or individuals acting on behalf of the IEE) who would like a list set up should first contact their IEE Staff Representative initially with the following information:
1 - The reason that you require the new list to be set up.
E.g. For a branch event announcements
2 - List Owner's Email
This is the email address of the person who will act as the list owner.
3 - List Description
This is used as a description for the mailing list when replying to the lists command. There is only room for 50 or so characters.
4 - Is the list going to be moderated? (yes or no)
Yes means that the list owner needs to approve all messages before they are posted to the list.
No means that all messages that are submitted by list subscribers will be posted directly to the list without the intervention of the list owner.
5 - Subscription Policy? (open, or closed)
Open means that anyone can subscribe themselves to the list
Closed means that only the list owner can add people to the list and any other subscription requests are bounced to the list owner for approval.
Note: Lists should never be set to open and unmoderated.
6 - Maxlength
The maximum size of a message in characters which by default is set to 40K however this can be increased to 1MB if it is a committee list.
7 - Do you want the list to be seen by anyone using the lists command?
If you send lists to majordomo@iee.org.uk, a list of the lists that are available are detailed. If it is a closed discussion group for a particular project that does not need to be publicised then the answer should be 'No'.
8 - Do you want to allow subscribers to use the 'who' command?
The Who command is used to find out the email addresses of the subscribers. This is usually set to 'No' because this ensures the privacy of members. This should protect the list subscribers emails from being abused.
Within a few days you should receive a message either telling you that your request has been approved and the list has been created, or that your request has been denied. If your request was approved you will also be sent various list information including the list password and list commands.
When your list is created, a mail alias will be created which will redirect all mail sent to the list owner to you. For example, if the list was called abcd then any mail sent to owner-abcd@iee.org.uk would be aliased (forwarded) on to you.
