Entrepreneurship in Young Engineers by Dr. Hans Wijesuriya Posted: 22/04/2004 |
|
A Presentation on "Entrepreneurship in Young Engineers" by Dr. Hans Wijesuriya, Chief Executive Officer of Dialog GSM was held at Salon Anthurium, Hotel Galadari, at 5.15pm on Tuesday 20th April, 2004. 63 members participated.
"When we work for someone else, we have less opportunity for being independent and innovative. A Young Engineer looking to start a small business may begin by thinking about offering a competitive advantage for a product that is already out on the market or a special service that is not otherwise available. He could even go so far as introducing a new technology. The final outcome could result in providing more satisfaction to customers and raising the levels of performance, apart from other benefits to the people. Besides the advantage of being independent and innovative it will also be financially rewarding. Entrepreneurship is therefore the topic of discussion for the day. It should be of great interest to Young Engineers." |

Voltage Sags in Power Systems and Sag Mitigation Techniques |
|
A Presentation on "Overview of Voltage Sags in Power Systems and Sag Mitigation Techniques" by Mr H.M. Wijekoon, Distribution Planning Engineer, CEB was held at Salon Anthurium, Hotel Galadari, at 5.15pm on Thursday 25th March, 2004. 61 members participated.
"Power quality and reliability are essential for proper operation of a process, which involves critical and sensitive loads. Power quality surveys have shown that the momentary disruptions in the form of voltage sags are the most severe power quality disturbances faced by industrial consumers whose production processes consist of sensitive loads. Additional measures have to be taken to protect sensitive loads, which are susceptible to voltage sags. The presentation is expected to discuss voltage sags in a power system, their causes and characteristics and sag mitigation techniques." |

|
Thirty-three high quality papers were presented at the Annual Sessions of the Younger Members Section of the IEE Sri Lanka on Saturday 20th September 2003 at the Electronics & Telecommunications Building of the University of Moratuwa.
The judges were unanimous and high in their praise for efforts taken, especially by the undergraduates at the end of their first year of study at the University. They were happy to note that these first year students had paid a great deal of attention to detail, and had come up with working and marketable prototypes, starting from the basic design concepts, within five weeks of the assignment being given. Details included an initial market survey, design, circuit simulation, computer aided drawings, physical process animation, PCB design, PCB manufacture, construction of prototype, cost analysis for mass scale production, marketing strategy, sales brochures, user leaflets, attractive packaging and in one case even a complete web-site to market the product. The Power Point presentations made by the students were also of extremely high quality. These first year projects had been done inorder to fulfil the requirements of Engineering Design and Engineering Skill Development in the degree course.
Among this is the automatic coffee maker to make coffee automatically at a pre-determined time. Freshly brewed coffee had even been drunk by the university panel during their undergraduate presentation.

IEE New Logo Posted: 19/12/2002 |
|
The IEE has a new Logo which will be introduced in January 2003. It has been developed from the IEE's own initials to create a unique logo - a symol of the brand not a mere group of three letters. The word "The" has been inserted into the symbol to emphasise the IEE's uniqueness and importance. The Symbol is based on bold block lettering to emphasise the new IEE's confidence and commitment to progress. Turning the letters through ninety degrees is also an expression of boldness, confidence and modernity. The new logo will clearly symbolise that the IEE has not only moved into the 21st century but is determined to be a vibrant part of it. [Extracted from the IEE news December 2002.] |

On Saturday 19th, he attended the International Seminar organised by the IESL and also presented a paper and chaired a session.

Locals benefit from the IEE Benevolent Fund Posted: 02/10/2002 |
|
I am happy to report that during the period of my Chairmanship of the IEE Sri Lanka (October 2000 to September 2002) three worthy persons have received financial support from the IEE Benevolent fund. The Benevolent fund assists those members of the IEE who are in financial need, and their dependants, after obtaining an evaluation of their situation from an honorary officer of the IEE in the particular local area. The Benevolent Fund gives one-off financial assistance to members who have temporarily fallen on hard times (such as one who has been approved for a one-off grant of around Rs 100,000 due to temporary periods of unemployment) or a weekly grant for those who need additional financial help or both(such as in the cases of a retired senior member who has a medical defect but otherwise leads a very normal life, and the dependants of a member who is in a semi-conscious state, who need some regular medical attention).
The IEE Benevolent Fund http://www.ieebenfund.org.uk/benfund/bfhome.html is entirely dependent on donations and legacies from individuals and does not receive any statutory funding. Since the beneficiaries of the Fund in the future can be even you or me, I would like to end my term of office, and this news item, with an appeal on behalf of the Fund for your annual contributions to the Benevolent Fund while you are in a position to do so.
