The SCADA world and an RTUs place in it
Seminar by Ms. Jane Søderblom, Friday 31.03.2000 Høgskolen i Bergen
What is SCADA and how many disguises does it wear?
We can talk of; EMS, PMS, DA/DMS, NIS, MIS, GIS and so on, but they are all routed in SCADA. This presentation will start with a look back to the roots of SCADA and RTUs and how they form the foundation of network automation.
Network automation vs. process automation
There was a phase when DCS was the new king and PLCs were lauded as the new heroes to replace RTUs. But is there really a difference between process automation and network automation? This presentation will maintain that there is, and that RTUs are here to stay.
If RTUs do then have a future - what is it?
What are the current trends in the business, and what might a crystal ball show us of life in this branch in 10 years time? This presentation will contain some present truths and some future guesses.
An example of the species
The presentation will finish with the chance to look at a simple demo RTU and SCADA system from ABB.
Note: The engineering world is not alone in its love of three letter abbreviations but we can be guilty of their gross over use to the extent of making ourselves unintelligible. If all the terms above are already known to you then I hope you'll enjoy the presentation and I expect you'll have some taxing questions for me afterwards. If it all looks like double dutch to you, then rest assured that I don't actually speak like that and that a glossary will be provided. I hope that by the end I'll have convinced you that it's all much more thrilling than it sounds.
