2004 Prestige Lecture

The first 2004 Prestige Lecture was presented to 115 people at the University of Auckland Engineering School on Tuesday 3 August 2004. Peter Maire, President of Navman NZ Ltd, inspired the audience with his story of the growth of Navman from a two person organisation 16 years ago to a $200million company today.

Navman became a part of the international Brunswick Corporation early in 2004.  Peter explained the necessity to become part of a large organisation in order to gain credibility with large potential customers. Navman now employs over 500 people worldwide and Peter made a plea for more engineering graduates from New Zealand universities.

Navman aims to put a global positioning device in each of the 40 million new cars produced every year around the world.  Peter advised that it is necessary to partner with other organisations in order to "Navigate the Innovation Path" successfully and to plan strategically rather than just following opportunities that appear.
