6th May 2008 - Green and Smart - Public transportation information after Beck
Lecture by - John Lindsay, Kingston University
Londoners and tourists have long been familiar with the map of the Undergound system. This became the prototype for many similar maps around the world and is based no a diagram created by Harry Beck, based on the concept of a circuit diagram. The problem is that it has never been bettered, or even well replicated. This takes some explanation for engineering technology. Now we have Google and Wikipedia and Grep. From the Greengauge proposal for high speed rail to the new terminal for Eurostar information seems uniformly appalling. Can this be explained, and can any betterment be achieved? We are now nearly half way through the UNESCO decade of education for sustainable development and the professional institutions all have an obligation to practice, so what can we say has been done, and what is to be done?
John Lindsay is Reader in Information Systems Design at Kingston University and has for twenty years been working on information for users of public transport.
Please make sure you get to "The Lion" to enjoy an interesting evening and to give the speaker lots of support.

14th May 2008 - Product Safety And Liability: Staying On The Right Side Of The Law
Dai Davis, Partner, Brooke North LLP
Product safety affects all products and systems. Even software must be "safe". In some circumstances, specific additional rules apply such as the CE Marking legislation for machine safety or electromagnetic compatibility. However, all products are caught by general legislation from the European Product Liability Directive to the United Kingdom's new rules on Corporate Manslaughter.
Many believe that product liability is something only manufacturers need concern themselves with. This is far from the truth. Not only do retailers and consultants in the distribution chain have product liability obligations under civil law, they can also be prosecuted under criminal product liability legislation.
Dai Davis, who is an acknowledges expert in product safety, product liability and product recall will discuss the liability that manufacturers, consultants and others in the supply chain have. He will also explain how that liability and the associated risks can best be mitigated.
Dai Davis is a Technology Lawyer. He is also a qualified Chartered Engineer. Having been head of Intellectual Property and then Information Technology law nationally for Eversheds for several years, Dai is now a partner at Leeds based Brooke North LLP, although he also works out of London on a regular basis. Dai advises clients on intellectual property, computer and technology law subjects including such topical matters as E-Commerce issues. He is primarily a non-contentious lawyer, specialising in advising on commercial agreements relating to software and technology products, including outsourcing agreements and intellectual property licences.
Dai also has considerable experience advising companies and consultants on product safety issues and product recall issues. Dai is the convenor of the International Electro-technical Committee TC56 - Legal Advisory Working Group (IEC TC56 being the organisation which is responsible for drafting international maintainability and dependability standards).
