Northumbria Network

Chairman's Welcome

I am pleased to welcome you to The IET Northumbria Local Network Programme for 2007/2008. Our network offers a broad range of technical lectures with contributions from our Specialist Teams, and there are also many activities for our younger and retired members.

Again, we have a great programme of lectures and events this year, and I am sure you will enjoy coming to those that interest you. Please invite your colleagues along, too! We welcome people of all ages to our events - including non-members - and it would be great to see even more younger people attending. Undergraduate and secondary school students are particularly welcome to attend our lectures.

The IET is YOUR Institution and I encourage you to make the most of it. If you believe that your professional interests are not represented by the varied programmes, organised by the three constituent Networks in the Region (Northumbria, Durham or Teesside), then do contact a Committee member from the appropriate Network. I am also keen to hear your views on how we can improve our regional network and look forward to receiving your comments.

I look forward to welcoming you to the various events we have planned for this year and wish all our members a peaceful, prosperous year.

THE ENIGMA MACHINE & FRIENDS
John Alexander
Almost everyone has heard of the German Enigma machine from WWII but many other systems were attacked by Bletchley Park's Code breakers too. Enigma & Friends is a collection that brings together many of these systems and displays them side by side for comparison. The period 1935 to 1999 is represented here.
Available to view will be a selection of Hagelin pinwheel machines - C36, BC38, C52, BC52RT, the German Enigma, NEMA, Typex (parts) and Fialka - all Enigma-like machines used by the Swiss, the UK and Russia. The speaker will cover the above systems from before and during WWII, on into the Cold War.

Annual Medical Electronics Lecture
IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH - THE STORY OF HUMAN BODY TEMPERATURE
Prof. Francis J. Ring DSc.
(University of Glamorgan)
The association between abnormal body temperature and disease in man can be traced to around 1000BC. After WW2 infrared sensor technology and thermal imaging increased the potential for the study of body temperature. In the last 50 years, this technology has dramatically improved, and so has the knowledge of human temperature distribution. Now in a fraction of a second and in real time, skin surface temperature can be digitally recorded, and with many thousands of temperature data points collected to provide an image for medical diagnostics. Both the technology and the applications in medical science continue to develop, so the story of human body temperature is far from complete!
Francis Ring is a clinical scientist with many years experience in quantitative imaging in medicine and was formerly Director of Imaging & Clinical Measurement at The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath. He is a specialist representative for BSI and serves on the ISO Committee for fever screening standards.

It is aimed at both potential and experienced Mentors and Mentees. A short video will demonstrate the many interpersonal skills required for Mentoring which can also be applied in many other situations.'
