IEE Mentoring Service
A mentor can be defined as ‘a wise and trusted professional friend’ who can encourage one to consider a wide range of opportunities and see problems from different perspectives. Mentors do not need to be expert in the mentee’s technical discipline, but do need to have the ability to listen and challenge with understanding and interest. Many engineers will already have their own mentors but some may welcome help from the IEE to establish a relationship with a trained mentor or their professional relationship.
The growth of small / medium sized businesses and the decline in the number of large traditional engineering and manufacturing companies means that the institutions need to provide support for the professional engineers working in these companies. They are often the only engineering expertise within the organisation and as such lack the engineering support that was experienced by engineers in previous generations.
The IEE is running a scheme to register and train members who would be willing to take on this rewarding role and to link them with members who want a mentor and soon there will be a web based mentoring training facility available on the IEE web site. The IEE Mentoring Service is already helping a substantial number of engineers plan their way into the future.
Should you wish to register as a mentor / mentee or seek further information please view the IEE web site Education and Careers section: iee.org/EduCareers/Mento.
