Last month, the Board of Trustees agreed with Robin McGill six strategic level objectives that represent the areas of the business that are key to the IET's success.
They are:
- Raise our media and industry profile
- Deliver the Local Networks project
- Define Knowledge Management and implement the right governance
- Grow membership by 2-3%
- Improve professional registration numbers
- Get our financial framework right
The Extended Leadership Team (IET 250) will be working together to shift our collective focus to these core activities, ensuring that, as a staff team, we have the right resources and appropriate plans in place to take an organisation-wide view on delivering these objectives.
Work continues on the migration of Local Network web sites across to the IET main web site. We currently have 114 webbies registered as training on the new Content Management System, Rhythmyx. Out of that figure a number have already graduated and are managing their own sites, including our most recent 'graduates' - Sherri Johnston (Durham) and Alan Teale (Germany). We now have 77 sites that have been migrated and are now live.
If you haven't yet contacted us and registered the name of your webmaster, please drop me an email to sbrown@theiet.org
Join Robin McGill for a live webcast, every month via www.iet.tv. In each webcast, Robin will explore and comment on issues raised by members as well as updating you on aspects of IET business, performance and development.
Each live session is supported by an interactive chat facility for you to post your questions direct to Robin in real time. In addition, there is a dedicated forum for you to add your views to, available from www.theiet.org/chiefexec or email them directly to myvoice@theiet.org
Recent webcasts have taken a themed approach and have covered important subject matters such as:
- Knowledge Management Activities at the IET
- A review of 2007
- Marketing and Communications
- Organising for Optimum Results
- EngTech and IEng
- Attracting and supporting students through to full membership
- Technical & Professional Networks
- Local Networks
- Younger Members
All the webcasts are available to you to watch on-demand on IET.tv (www.iet.tv) or from the dedicated My Voice webpage at www.theiet.org/chiefexec

The IET Library has recently released to members access to the full-text of 12 market research reports from industry analyst Key Note. Key Note has been publishing reports encompassing 30 industry sectors for more than 30 years. Their range of titles has been acclaimed for its quality, accessibility and breadth of coverage.
The collection of reports that members can now access anytime, anywhere by logging in to the IET Web site cover aerospace, CCTV, digital broadcasting, electrical contracting, electricity in Europe, energy, IT security, IT training, mobile telecommunications, renewable energy in Europe, telecommunications, and videoconferencing. Each report is between 100 to 150 pages and may include data on market definition; market size; industry background; competitor analysis; strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT); buying behaviour; current issues; the global market; forecasts; company profiles; consumer confidence; and further sources of information.
These reports provide a valuable resource for sales direction and preparation, business development and planning, advertising strategy, benchmarking, and targeting new leads.
The collection complements the continually expanding range of resources that comprise the Virtual Library, making it a real benefit of membership. Other full-text resources that members can access include almost 1,000 e-books and databases of papers and articles from over 8,000 journals and magazines.

Following the change of the remit of the SETPOINTs to become focussed on brokerage rather than delivery, some changes are being made to the way local schools activities and identified and delivered. Details of the new arrangements are currently being finalised with STEMNET (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) and information will be circulated to Local Networks, Schools Liaison Officers and SETPOINTs over the next few months. The aim is to achieve the delivery of high quality activities which meet IET objectives, with more consistency across all areas.
The availability of funding for collaborative schools activities to be delivered during the 2009 calendar year will be advertised by STEMNET in September 2008. Funding bids will be submitted to STEMNET by potential activity deliverers by the end of October. All bids will need to meet IET objectives and will require endorsement by the appropriate SLO (or LN Honorary Secretary if no SLO is in post). An independent panel operated by STEMNET will agree which activities will receive funding and contracts will be issued to successful bidders.
Arrangements will be put in place to ensure that events which have become regular dates in school calendars and which are shown to be of high quality are considered for funding.
Further information about local schools activities can obtained from Elaine Mercer, Education 5-19, Stevenage, Hertfordshire. UK
