Top technology innovators win recognition
15 September 2005
Some of the world’s top technology innovators for 2005 were honoured at an awards ceremony in London last night.
Those recognised represent the cream of an international crop of engineers and the awards list included a surveillance system giving pilots a clearer picture of air traffic, the world’s smallest fingerprint template able to fit on the magnetic strip of a credit card, an enhanced GPS system strengthening the ability of emergency services to communicate with each other, and a wireless network link that will improve the quality of life for people in remote communities all over the world.
In its inaugural year, the IEE Innovation in Engineering Awards recognises and celebrates excellence in engineering innovation across a range of industry sectors and engineering disciplines.
Winners were selected out of hundreds of outstanding entries from around the world by a distinguished panel of judges that included Internet pioneer Sir Tim Berners Lee, Sir John Chisholm, executive chairman of Qinetiq, Alice Rawsthorn, director of the Design Museum, Dr Raj Rajagopal, chief executive of BOC Edwards, and Sir Robin Saxby, executive chairman of ARM.
Entries were judged on a number of factors including social and economic impact, novelty, and patentability.
Speaking at the awards ceremony Dr. Alf Roberts, IEE chief executive said: “Innovation is about identifying market needs, coming up with the ideas that capture this potential value and then bringing these ideas to life through effective management, organisation and processes.
In addition to being at the forefront of advancing and disseminating knowledge and playing a key role in promoting engineering and technology, the IEE is committed to encouraging and celebrating the spirit of innovation displayed by the winners and finalists of these awards.”
