Sir Robin Saxby Awarded 2002 Faraday Medal

Sir Robin Saxby BEng DEng, Executive Chairman of ARM Holdings plc, has been awarded the 2002 IEE Faraday Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the electronic engineering industry. Sir Robin received the Medal from IEE President Professor Brian Mellitt at a ceremony held on Tuesday 2 July 2002 at ARM Holdings in Cambridge.

The Faraday Medal is awarded annually for notable scientific or industrial achievement in electrical engineering or for conspicuous service rendered to the advancement of electrical science. The Medal is awarded regardless of nationality, country of residence or membership of the Institution.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Brian Mellitt said:

"Sir Robin is an exceptionally dynamic and bright entrepreneur, who has established a strong national and international presence for his company, ARM Holdings plc, with innovative products developed via successful exploitation of advances in silicon chip technology. The company designs and licenses microprocessor cores for use in telecommunications, consumer electronics and other applications. Around 30 of the top 35 semiconductor manufacturers are now licensees of its technology.

"In addition, Robin is a board member of the Belgian company, Sirius Communications NV, and a non-executive Director of Glotel plc.

"Between 1984 and 1986, Sir Robin was Chief Executive Officer of Henderson Security Systems Limited and, before that, spent eleven years with Motorola Semiconductors in a variety of sales, marketing and engineering management roles. He worked for five years for European Silicon Structures SA (ES2), another start-up company which pioneered the innovative ‘Direct Write’ method of manufacturing another type of silicon chip, Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). He was Vice-President of Northern Europe, Managing Director of ES2 Limited and President of its USA affiliate US2.

"Sir Robin was Chairman of the Open Microprocessor Initiative Advisory Group, a European Union panel set up to advise on collaborative R&D activity in Europe, and he was Chairman of one of the European Framework programme Advisory Panels He was also an influential UK member of the CORNU Panel, which made a valuable contribution to the future of microelectronics in Europe.

"In 2000 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Engineering from Liverpool University and he was appointed a visiting professor to his old department of electronics at the University. In 2002 he was appointed Knight Batchelor in the New Year Honours List.

"Sir Robin Saxby is the 80th recipient of the IEE Faraday Medal, the highest honour which this Institution confers. We are proud that he now joins a distinguished roll of honour, that began in 1922 with Oliver Heaviside".
